Traffic Incident Management: A Team Effort to Keep You Safe

Traffic Incident Management is a coordinated team effort that involves you, too. Deer-Grove EMS works alongside the Cottage Grove Police Department, Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, Cottage Grove and Deerfield fire departments, and towing companies to keep roadways clear and traffic moving safely after incidents.

When you spot us working on the roadway, please help us help you by staying alert, slowing down, and moving over a lane. Your cooperation can literally save lives.

What is Traffic Incident Management?

Traffic Incident Management (TIM) is the coordinated response to clear roadway incidents quickly and safely. This includes vehicle crashes, stalled or disabled vehicles, debris in the roadway, hazardous material spills, and other emergencies that block or threaten traffic flow. The goal is to restore normal traffic conditions as quickly as possible while protecting responders, victims, and other motorists.

Why Crash Responder Safety Week Matters

Crash Responder Safety Week is not just about safe driver behavior around roadway crashes. It’s about practicing safe driving habits for ALL roadway incidents, every day of the year.

On any given day, approximately 50,000 traffic incident responders across the United States work roadside to restore safe travel. These men and women put themselves at risk every time they respond to help others. Secondary crashes caused by distracted or inattentive drivers remain a leading cause of injury and death among emergency responders.

How You Can Help

When approaching any roadway incident:

  • Stay alert and put down your phone
  • Slow down significantly
  • Move over to a non-adjacent lane if safe to do so
  • Never rubberneck or take photos while driving
  • Follow the directions of emergency personnel
  • Be patient—clearance takes time, and safety is the priority

Together, we can make Dane County’s roadways safer for everyone.
